I’ve recently begun jonesing for another suit; my old black Boss has just lost its shape, and doesn’t look right anymore. My guy from Harry Rosen called to see if needed anything, and I’m considering picking another one up. I’ve also thought about going to Trend Custom, purportedly the only bespoke tailors in Canada (or Toronto, at least).

But God help me, I really want a suit from Thomas at English Cut, especially now that he’s considering ready-to-wear and it’s less than what I usually pay.

  1. There are not many Bespoke tailors in Toronto from what I have heard but there are others than Trend. Do not know if they are good. However, I am suprised you have not looked at Montreal. It was and to a degree still is the capital for the garment production. Peerless Clothing – makes Fubu, Ralph Lauren etc. Samuehlson – makes the arguably the best RTW suits in North America for the price. Fully canvassed made with real people on Sewing machines. Canali quality some say. Don’t much about their styles but the ones I have seen look pretty contemporary. since it is still the most fashionable city in Canada it is not hard to get handmade clothes. The most know is Dubuc – though mostly RTW and over the top avant-garde in style – they do make bespoke suits. Though the quality is debatable I hear. Regarding bespoke in Montreal there are a number of Italian tailors, lebanese tailors etc who do excellent work. There are about twenty ones doing good work. Though only some will do hand-sewn buttonholes. Most if not all do fully canvassed construction, bemberg or silk linings, working button holes on the cuffs etc. Where do you think the leaders of industry BCE Corp, prime ministers etc go? They go to tailors in Montreal! There are a number of excellent hand-made shirt makers too. Usually starting at $180 and up. Some at $260 and up. Anyway, right just got out my bespoke navy blue linen suit with Dormeuil bemberg lining. Hand sewn – though some parts ie: rear and side seams are machined sewn. Fully canvassed, working buttonholes, natural shoulders and sharp cut. For $300 not bad! But I supply the fabric – cuts out alot of cost and I know the best for the least tailor. It is not Gianni Campagna or Attolini quality – but hell, it fits like a dream, looks damn sharp not unlike a Belvest or D’avenza and is of sound construction- cut from one bolt, designed in three fittings – made by one master tailor. A secret that can be only undone for a high-price or good sleuthing! Its sure good to live in Montreal for those with a bespoke habit.
