Let’s think about that for a minute – 87% of people will pay $1 for a bagel if you put out a jam jar with a hole cut in the lid, so why wouldn’t the same number of people pay 50c for an MP3 if you give them a PayPal link?

That’s easy: because other people see you take the bagel, and see whether or not you put in money. It’s a public transaction. Downloading MP3s is not, it’s anonymous.
That’s why his idea of ratios, or ratings, to keep people honest is excellent and essential. It’s the only thing that keeps things like Demonoid or eBay running.
