If you add some facial hair and an Adam's apple, maybe

Just got home from the Auld Spot, where we had dinner and a couple of drinks with CBGB. I hadn’t seen them for a while; they were away in Europe and my scarlet fever kept me housebound upon their return. By the way, CB, this is what Sabrina Lloyd looks like. –>

Booked a whole great big bunch of travel stuff today, so that’s effectively off our plate. I can now focus on getting all my school work done before the 20th, and then I can concentrate on packing for a few days. Then I have five days in which to help unpack and set up before I bugger off for book learnin’.

Bring the sked

Travel plans for the fall* are coming together. We’re very excited.

.:.

Our schedule for the next little while is becoming very clear. I actually don’t like having this many plans; I prefer to stumble into each day and do whatever, but that’s not in the cards right now. This weekend I have a paper to write for my course. Next week we have a busy social calendar and then I’ll finish off as much of my course as I can before we take possession of our condo on the 9th. Around this time the NHL & NBA playoffs begin. We’ll be cleaning, painting, etc. for the next two weeks (and ignoring most of the Hot Docs festival) until our actual move-in; a few days after the move I go away on course for a week. No sooner do I return than the social activities of May (the Santé wine festival, a reunion in Niagara-on-the-Lake with some Dal alumni friends, Victoria day, GB’s birthday) begin. June is fairly light, though I disappear for another course toward the end, and nothing’s really planned for July or August. I suppose I should be using that time to do the giant integrative paper that’s due in the fall, since September (between an abbreviated film festival, another week away on course and two weeks of vacation) is a write-off.

*Yes, we plan this far in advance. Make fun of us all you want; it was taking our time with planning and research that made the Rockies trip our best vacation ever.

At least he didn't nail anyone to the floor

By the way, in case you’re wondering: I passed stats. Hallelujah.

In an ironic twist, an actor from the series Oz could be heading to prison in relation to a death that, ordinarily, one would only expect to see on TV. In fact, I believe at least one character on Oz was killed by being pushed down an elevator shaft.

That reminds me…I really must pick up the final season on DVD.

trio | ripetizione

I’ve been listening to three songs over and over for the past few days:

  • “No Heaven” by Champion
  • “The End’s Not Near” by Band Of Horses
  • “Dummy Room” by The Vindictives

They’re three pretty different songs, but all very catchy and very good.

.:.

It’s back to the schooly grind tomorrow. I have over 1100 pages to read, 2 cases, a term paper and 6 topic discussions to write, and 6 quizzes to take between now and the end of April.

The summer of Dan

I’m a very happy MBA student right now. Not only did I just finished stats/quants (which is generally thought to be one of the least pleasant courses), and not only am I now more than 60% of the way through, but I have a very favourable series of courses coming up:

  • Information Systems (IT is kind of my specialty, so this will be like a 3-month vacation for me)
  • Strategic Thinking (I took this course before I even started the MBA; that doesn’t mean I can skip it, but I’m already more than familiar with the subject matter)
  • Financial Risk (as I understand it, this is running computer simulations to determine financial risk of various investment & spending strategies…again, computers + numbers = my wheelhouse)

That puts me into September. I’ve been joking with classmates that this is the summer of Dan (a term I adapted from Seinfeld), and offered my assistance since this is probably one of the few times I’ll be of any help to anyone.

George: This is gonna be my time. Time to taste the fruits and let the juices drip down my chin. I proclaim this: The Summer of George!

[A bee comes and George has to run inside]

I also have a large comprehensive term paper to write up by the end of October, but I’m not worried about that. A classmate and I already have a topic in mind, with a ton of supporting material already lined up, and neither of us struggle to fill pages.

.:.

Since it’s cold out and neither of us are feeling that well, Nellie and I are undertaking the very winter-y exercise of watching the Leafs play the Canadiens, and then watching a movie: The Devil Wears Prada. Now that is the definition of marital compromise.

Just in the final hours of prep now. Class is over, pizza’s been eaten. Done all the studying and practicing I plan on doing. Just gonna relax, watch my girlfriend on 30 Rock, pack, maybe do one last quick review of my notes and then head over to the bar. It is, after all, Burns night.

The network connection in my room has gone bye-bye, so I just spent 45 minutes hunched over a laptop reading all my sites and feeds. Great way to start the day.

The course is almost over. Two more chapters and a few more things to do before the exam tomorrow. 27.5 hours from now I’ll be a happy guy.
