Yup, "porcini" sounds about right

I just happened to glance at my economics textbooks, which I haven’t looked at since I finished the course in March. The name of one of the authors seemed familiar…I had to think about it…Bernanke, Bernanke…Oh.

Yes, that Bernanke.

Huh. Who knew the guy who co-wrote our economics textbook would go on to be chairman of the Fed?

Posting’s been light (and rather airy) lately ’cause I gots International Business coming out my ears. However, I’ve managed to get ahead of my work plan, even while getting some extra gym time in. Trust me, I need it; yesterday I saw a picture of myself taken on Friday. Not good. Something must be done.

Summerlicious is nearly upon us. We booked Goldfish for dinner with a couple of friends, but I’d like to get Canoe for our dinner with T-Bone. Indeed, I’d like to get Canoe every year and never do, so fooey to that. Perhaps Bymark; I notice they’ve made the wonderburger part of the ‘licious menu (as opposed to the required upgrade of ‘liciouses past).

.:.

Sigh…the afore mentioned burger is “8 oz. USDA Prime beef with brie de meaux, grilled porcini, truffle aioli and crisp onion rings.” And I wonder how I gain weight?

Je suis fatigue.

My wife just told me I haven’t been posting much lately. I guess it’s ’cause I’m busy. And tired. I can tell the tired bit ’cause this morning, when she got up to go to the gym, I didn’t wake up at all. Normally I’m a very light sleeper and wake up at the slightest bit of noise, but this morning I was dead to the world — slept through her alarm, through her getting ready, through the cats being pains in the ass…everything. That tells me that I must be exhausted, and no wonder; usually after a course I take the weekend (if not the entire next week) to recuperate, but this time I had the laptop on from morning to night working on the paper that’s due Thursday. That’s almost done, but I’ve already started reading the next textbook because of how heavy the workload looks, so I haven’t had any break.
That’s to say nothing of trying to catch up on work after a week away.

I don’t mean to whine. Part of me kind of relishes tough situations like this, but I know that I’m no longer able to propel myself along on caffeine with no sleep for weeks on end like I could when I was at Delano. I just need a little rest. Friday evening can’t get here fast enough.

The front end of a 1-2 punch

No sooner do we finish one course when the next begins. This next one — international business — looks like it’ll be a busy one. Every week from now until the middle of September I’ll have to read about 70 pages, post comments on a number of articles, and work on two assignments and a 10,000-word term paper. Yay. Amidst all this fun are plans for Summerlicious, the Film Festival, my birthday and visits from both brothers.

That said, I think I’ll find the course really interesting. They’ve kept the material up to date, so we’re dealing with issues like the effects of globalization, poverty as a cause of terrorism, the effectiveness of the IMF and World Bank, the rise of China and India as world powers, and so on. Interesting stuff, to be sure, but the prof seems very tough and the schedule’s pretty much relentless. But I didn’t sign up ’cause I thought it’d be a cakewalk, and I’m glad to actually have a challenging course again.

I say it’s the front end of a 1-2 punch because immediately following this course I start a course of quantitative methods, which is as fun as it sounds, by all reports. It’s also known as one of the knockout courses; they said that about economics, which was a joke, but the folks I’ve seen at the quants intensive looked pretty frazzled. Anyway, that runs until January after which I have a niiiiiice, eeeeeeeasy IT course for several months which should give me time to deal with moving into the new condo.  If all goes according to plan.

Aaaaaaaaaaand I'm spent

Quick exam, so I got out of there by 10:00. No waiting around, so socializing, so lunch, no goodbyes. I just want to go home, play with my cats, sit on my couch and hug my baby when she gets home.

As always, I have the Arcade Fire pounding my ears for the cab ride home. Thanks guys. See you again in September.

Studying done. Beer consumed. Packing begun. Karaoke avoided (although I did hear PacMan rip off a killer version of “Cracklin’ Rosie”).

Time for some sleep.

Paper #1 is 98% done. Paper #2 is nearly there, just requiring integration and some final touches.

Dinner has nasty tonight, so we placed our regular Thursday night pizza order and relaxed in the bar for a while. I now have a couple of hours to answer some emails, make some final edits and review my notes before tomorrow’s exam. I like being at this stage, when there’s really nothing left to do.

16 hours and I should be home. Kickass.

Catching up…

Torontoist spots an asshat parking his H2 in a handicapped parking spot. The Star says Bob Cole needs to retire from calling hockey, and I agree. He should take Harry Neale with him. Still with The Star, Ben Rayner asks if Radiohead is overrated. Not a chance, sez I. Finally, two links from Yes But No But Yes: super cuteness and super ugliness.

Last day of the class (save tomorrow’s exam). I’m a little tired, but it’s par for the course on the Thursdays. We’re in good shape, project-wise; a few things to tie up and put together and we’re home free.

Since dinner tonight I’ve had two ice cream bars, two cans of diet pepsi and six chocolate covered coffee beans.

I am not tired. Go figure.

Since we just now finished working I’m having a beer to try to bring me back down. Hooray for depressants.

Comin’ up on the 2/3 mark of the course. I’m taking an hour to start putting my portion of the report into something humans can read, then eat, then circle back with the rest of the group. I’m mostly keeping the cold at bay…just have to hold on for another 43 hours or so and I’m all good.

Must…tear self…away from Simpsons episode…

Our prof is sick so we kind of got the morning off to work on our projects. However, since my brain doesn’t really spin up until about noon, I’m not getting a lot accomplished. Pity.
