Underrated films

I believe these seven films take undeserved abuse. I had a whole other list of criminally unappreciated movies, but that’s different. And much longer. Maybe some day.

Warning: I throw a few plot spoilers in there, so if you see the name of a movie you want to watch but haven’t yet, stop reading.

  • The Blair Witch Project. By now we’ve all seen parodies of the famous scene where Heather whimpers and snots up close, but when I saw this movie — on opening weekend, before all the hype — it scared the crap out of me. It was the only movie to ever do that.
  • The Godfather III. Take Sofia Coppola out of the picture and it’s in the same ballpark as chapters I and II. You can’t fault Pacino — especially in the final scenes — and Andy Garcia was perfect. This isn’t a terrible movie; this is a sub-standard Godfather film, which still puts it in the top 1%.
  • Mission Impossible 3. People jumped on this one because Tom Cruise’s psychosis had come to a boil around the release date, but it was probably the best of the series. The first one was overwrought and boring; the second a little too heavy on style and light on action.
  • Romeo & Juliet. The Baz Luhrmann version took flak because…I dunno, people think it’s only meant to be done in floofy accents period costume, but they forget that Shakespeare was a populist writer. The man was the Stephen King, the Danielle Steele of his day. Luhrmann took a well-crafted, overly-familiar story and turned it on its ear, and it was eye-grabbing and innovative.
  • Signs. People seem to dislike this movie, but I think it was Shyamalan’s best. The complaint I hear the most is about the alien, but for god’s sake, the alien was barely in it. The movie was funny, well-acted, well-paced, tense and told a far better story than the vast majority of movies that offer equal scare potential. Shit, any movie with Mel Gibson running around in the dark yelling, “I’m insane with anger!” is worth watching again.
  • Starship Troopers. Is the acting terrible? No. The acting is putrid. Abhorrent. Unholy, even. But there’s more social satire in there than people remember (though not nearly as much as was in the book) and the special effects still look better than most of what you see today, even though it was made nine years ago.
  • Vanilla Sky. Tom Cruise again…what the? Anyway…I admit, I have a soft spot for Cameron Crowe, but even I didn’t like this one at first. My friend Mike convinced me to give it another try, and the second time through it was like watching a whole other film. Watch it with the director’s commentary.

#1 with a c-section scar

Britney Spears is once again the top Yahoo search. Turns out all you have to do to be #1 is marry a twat, dump him and then flash your goods to the public whilst driving around town with the world’s biggest whore*.

Hard to believe, but Federline might actually be thinking, “Whew…glad I got off of that train wreck…”

*I mean the whore thing mainly in terms of being a publicity whore. Mainly.

Time is not on my side

According to the {1/2 your age + 7} rule It will be August of 2017 before I can look at Hayden Panettiere and not feel like a lech.

That could be a problem ’cause…well, look. That’s what I see in hi-def every week. NOT fair.

Wait…I wouldn’t be able to date her until 2017*, but I only have to feel like a lech ’til she’s 19…and that’s in two years! Sweet! Heroes probably won’t even last that long…

*of course, I’ll still be married to my lovely wife. right honey? ha ha. ha ha ha ha.

Load "*",8,1

They adore their 64s. Their Commodore 64s. Holy crap, that brings back memories. I don’t know how many people have fond memories of typing commands into a blue screen when they were 5 years old, but I’m one of them.

And before all you people roll your eyes and think what a geek I was for not being outside playing baseball when I was 5, I did that too. I was well-rounded. So suck it.

When I tuned into tonight’s Habs-Bruins game the score was 4-2 Boston. The Canadiens, however, were completely dominating — penning the Bruins in their own zone, getting good shots, cycling, shooting, holding the puck — so I expected, short of a goaltending miracle, that they would tie it up. And they did, with a few seconds left in the second. The Bruins took a 5-4 lead late in the third, but the Canadiens tied it up again. Finally, though, they were undone by shoddy goaltending and shoddier officiating. Michael Ryder was crosschecked to the ice in the offensive zone; the Bruins, of course, came up the ice and scored. It was the second straight shot from the point to beat David Aebischer, who didn’t exactly look sharp. Too bad; the Canadiens were two minutes from salvaging a point. Final score, 6-5 Boston. Argh.

You wanna close your flap, that I don't forego my eggs?

Vacation days are good for one’s sanity. Not that I have any particular stress in my life; it just helps to break up the routine.

According to the doctor I’m experiencing some acid reflux. No ulcers or anything else untoward. Should be able to take care of it with a prescription and eschewing habanero peppers.

I finished the last episode of Deadwood today. After not liking it much to start I was completely into it by the end, and Al Swearengen went from annoying me to being one of my favourite characters on TV.

I also caved and watched the first few hours of Battlestar Galactica, which Nellie’s been raving about for two months. I liked it, but I think she’s set my expectations impossibly high. Still, it seems entertaining enough for me to watch. I just have to get through the current season of The Wire first. Damn you, HBO.

Happy birthday, baby Jesus. I hope you like crap.

I’m trapped in the doctor’s office waiting room, and this Christmas music is killing me. I just heard a jive version of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”. Up next: Anne Murray singing “Away In A Manger”.

He’p me, Jesus. He’p me.

[UPDATE] Now it’s “Mary’s Boy Child” by Boney M. Hallelujah.

[UPDATE2] Michael Buble followed immediately by Mariah Carey. I’m praying for death.

Defining an interesting blog

Like Scott Adams, Malcolm Gladwell has an amazing ability to break everything down logically and succinctly. His latest post about how to define racism — using Mel Gibson, Michael Richards and Michael Irwin as recent celebrity examples — is dead on.

Adams, for his part, points out today how American taxpayers could’ve been spared the expense of the Baker-Hamilton report on Iraq by just reading his blog.

Another blog I’ve come across more recently, but which is equally interesting, is The Economist’s Free Exchange blog. It’s written by multiple people, and it deals with economic issues. I know, I know, economic discussions usually rival duck calling and sock drawer organization for excitement, but Free Exchange is written in plain enough terms that it makes sense — and holds interest for — the average intelligent person. This post about a luxury goods embargo against North Korea is a good example; it shows how little politicians actually know about economics.

Of course, this newfound interest in plain-talking economics — which has led to a proliferation of blogs on the subject — is largely due to Freakonomics, but bravo to The Economist for running with it.

At the end of the day they choose the nerd.

We’re a bit dozy today. We were out until 2:00ish last night celebrating CB’s birthday with dinner at Rain and drinks at the Chez Victor bar, and didn’t end up going to sleep until 3:30 (see below). We feel fine (which I suspect is better than how CB’s feeling this morning) but we’re still just tired. We’re trying to figure out how we can not go outside at all today. So far it’s our inability to conjure groceries from the air that’s getting in the way.

By the way, driving through clubland at 2 in the morning gives you a brief but entertaining glimpse into the drunk, retarded & homogeneous segment of our population.

.:.

Because I was still completely awake when we got home I decided to watch the Leafs/Canadiens game, recorded earlier in the evening. It’s the first time I’ve been able to watch a Habs game in hi-def, and what an amazing game it was. The Canadiens were atrocious in the first period, just pathetic. Down 2-0 nothing early, and it wasn’t even that close. They managed to claw back into the game though, on the back of Saku Koivu, who practically willed two shots into the net. It went to overtime, then to a shootout, where Sheldon Souray (of all people) scored the winning goal.

Honestly, the Canadiens were lucky to get this one. They twice spotted the Leafs 2-goal leads, were outshot (and outplayed) badly in the first and parts of the second, and watched the final Leafs shootout attempt go off the crossbar. What really seemed to give them life was Francis Bouillon knocking Darcy Tucker out with a straight right to the nose after Tucker had run him into the boards. There were a bunch of big hits all night, and Mike Komisarek had an all-out war with Mats Sundin, so passions were running high…it must’ve been a hard loss for the Leafs to take.

.:.

Stephane Dion, Liberal party leader. I certainly didn’t expect that, but I can’t say I’m disappointed. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next election though. As Rick Mercer put it,

“Liberals see a saviour who will bring them back to power and the Tories are rubbing their hands in glee over the prospect of heading into battle against a French guy who has a dog named Kyoto.”

Please god…no more dog jokes.
