Argo (imdb | rotten tomatoes) was one of the marquee films at TIFF this year, one that many thought would contend for the best picture Oscar. After watching it yesterday, I can see that. It was a very good movie — not a great one, but certainly the kind of picture that wins an Oscar. Even though we knew the broad strokes of the story, it’s the details that make the difference in stranger-than-fiction accounts like this. Well worth your two hours.

From the BBC: Al-Qaeda accuses Iran of 9/11 lie.

Al-Qaeda’s deputy leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has blamed Iran for spreading the theory that Israel was behind the 11 September 2001 attacks. In an audio tape posted on the internet, Zawahiri insisted al-Qaeda had carried out the attacks on the US.

So let me see if I’ve got this straight…Al Qaeda are pissed at Iran for trying to steal their terrorist street cred and give it to Israel? I have now, officially, seen everything.

I wonder if it occurs to Al Qaeda that they’re indirectly criticizing Iran’s anti-semitism…

The US and Iran have engaged in their most serious military confrontation in recent times, with American warships on the verge of opening fire on gunboats of the Revolutionary Guards which had threatened to blow them up.

Sound familiar?

The “Gulf of Tonkin Incident” defined the beginning of large-scale involvement of U.S. armed forces in Vietnam. Historians have shown that the second incident was, at its best interpretation, an overreaction of eager naval forces. [via Wikipedia]

Last night’s loss by the Canadiens almost killed me. Watching Montreal completely outplay Florida for 58 minutes and then give up the tying goal with 10 seconds left, finally losing the game on the last shot of the shootout…it was almost too much to bear.

After the game Alex Kovalev couldn’t hide his displeasure with coach Guy Carbonneau, re-igniting rumours of Kovalev’s imminent trade to Calgary. Keep it up, Kovalev, sez I.
