The new (tiny) hotness

My eee PC showed up today. I’ve wanted to get a sub-notebook for a while, something I could carry around town easily. Another big factor was needing something on our travels, to blog from the road, manage & upload pictures, keep track of reservations, etc. Thus, our impending trip to Alberta/BC (18 days!) gave me a reason to finally pull the trigger.

I’d considered getting something a little nicer like an HP 2133, but it was twice the cost and harder to find, so I went with the cheap option. There’s so much growth in these devices right now that anything I buy today will be defunct tomorrow anyway.

The wee keyboard might be an adjustment though. “To load Firefox, mash the keyboard with your palm now.”

  1. I fired it up last night and played with it for a few hours. The small keyboard could take a bit of getting used to, but it’s not like I’ll be spending all day on it as my work computer. The small vertical screen space can be problematic for apps like google reader too, so minimizing toolbars and tabs is key, but that can be worked around.

It’s damn easy to use though. Boots in 15 seconds, very easy-to-use interface (I can see why kids and newbies would like them) and only weighs a couple of pounds. Has a built-in SD reader too, so we can pull the memory card right out of the camera.

Bought an 8GB memory key from Future Shop for $30 last night, so that should give us plenty of room for pictures, TV shows / movies to watch on the plane, etc.
