The good, the bad and the hyperextended

I definitely have a cold. Sore throat, stuffed up goodness. It’s not that bad yet, but it’s enough to be annoying.

I also seem to have pulled a muscle (?) in my chest last night while dismantling the TV/stereo equipment. I assume it was from trying to gently drop the 101-pound TV into the box; I actually don’t remember doing it. All I know is that this morning it hurts to do…well, anything.

On the plus side: I have the day off, I finished my stats assignment last night, and my new TV & stereo are being delivered today.

I am now officially at the low point of this MBA program. The administrators warned us we’d bottom out somewhere around the beginning of the third year, and they were right. It feels like we’ve been at this forever (it’s been just over two years, in fact) but it also feels like we’re still far from finishing (just under two years, obviously). We also just finished off one of the worst courses (as far as workload) and moved immediately into another — quantitative methods — which is as boring as watching paper turn yellow in the sun.

Quants is no picnic either when it comes to the amount of work to do: in order to avoid schoolwork over the Christmas holidays I have to read about 30 pages — of stats, mind you — each night and work on perpetual assignments. I’m trying to run 2-3 miles 5-6 times a week, plus there’s work and the usual errands like groceries. There’s also my daily RSS compulsion; I feel a little lost if I can’t see what’s going on in the world. I’d love to write more interesting things on the blog but I just don’t have the hours. Luckily Nellie takes it upon herself to cook for my sorry ass pretty much every night or I’d be the walking dead.

I’ll be really glad when I can watch TV or go see a movie without feeling guilty for not studying.

54.62% down. 45.38% to go.

So Divided

The first half of the new …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead disc So Divided is excellent. Not as good as Source Tags And Codes, mind you, but almost nothing is. Better than Worlds Apart, even. But the second half falls off badly. I’ll probably still buy it when it’s released in November, but I wish I could buy the first five songs and just pretend it was an EP. I guess if I download it from eMusic I can do exactly that…

I dislike stats. Actually, that’s not true; I dislike stats assignments that take forever.

Brain –> page

The Onion’s A.V. Blog reports that two of the TIFF films that I’m most anticipating might have trouble getting on screens south of the border. I suspect no such issues here in Canada, but it’s a sad state of affairs. As the article states,

“In both cases, films are being shut out of theaters for their ideas, not for any explicit or offensive content on the surface. These gatekeepers have basically decided that adults need to be shielded from ideas that they deem inappropriate. They’ve creating a special rating and it’s called GFY (Go Fuck Yourself).”

I might be in the minority, but I’m all for Hockey Night In Canada moving from CBC to TSN/CTV. Why? Because I, like most of the rest of the country, can’t stand watching the prime time game being called by a pair of Leafs homers who’re on the down slope of their careers. Bob Cole and Harry Neale may be nice guys, but you may as well go watch the game in your Toronto-fan grandpa’s rec room. Gord Miller’s a better play-by-play man, Pierre Maguire’s better at colour (and actually knows the names of some non-Leaf NHLers), and they have guys like Bob McKenzie, Glenn Healy, James Duthie and Chris Cuthbert to boot.

The best part: no more Don Cherry. I’d like it if they could salvage MacLean somehow, but if he has to be sacrificed in order to distract Cherry while they pack up the HNIC set, then so be it.

Because all my music is encoded at 128kbps (it’s the only way it’ll all fit on my Nomad) I’m thinking this would be a good investment.

Hey, WOXY’s back.

Slides in a museum; bitchin’. My brother’s already mentioned it, but this exhibit at London’s Tate Modern looks very cool. When I was there that hall was filled with a giant (and I do mean giant; it was about a hundred feet tall) double-ended red horn.

If I have time tonight I’ll try to post more pictures from our trip. Day 3 was the motherload (400+ pics) so it could take me a while to slog through them.

.:.

I’ve finally had to pick up my next textbook. However, it’s a statistics course, and I find stats kind of interesting. Sick puppy, I know.

New TV: Heroes has me hooked. Studio 60 is, apparently, in trouble, proving once again that Aaron Sorkin is too smart to write for television. I haven’t watched Friday Night Lights yet, but if it’s as good as the movie I’ll stick around for the ride.

The twain just met

Here’s an interesting confluence of personal interest and scholarly pursuit: the Russian music downloading site AllOfMP3.com, which provides extremely cheap downloads with no copyright protection, is apparently one of the — perhaps the onlymajor barrier to Russia joining the World Trade Organization. A site like AllOfMP3 would surely violate the TRIPs agreement on international recognition of intellectual property rules, and TRIPs is what I just wrote a whole paper on (though I focused on generic medication for poor countries, not music copyright).

This book learnin’ might come in handy after all…

Happiness is laziness & italian food

Here’s why I am exceedingly happy at the moment:

  • I’ve had an afternoon to vegetate and regain some energy. I considered going in to the office, but I knew I’d be of absolutely no use. So I hung out with the cats and caught up on stuff around the house instead.
  • Nellie’s home!
  • I have decided not to do any work on my next course — quantitative methods — until we get back from Alberta. That means no studying for 2 weeks.
  • We’re going to Fieramosca for dinner.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…

Good old Beck

A nice man is driving me home in a green and orange car that’s older than me. I don’t care; I’m just happy to be on my way.

The exam wasn’t bad at all. My hand is cramped up, but I feel pretty confident. I daresay there’ll be people still writing at the final bell.

Scott Adams’ post on his Dilbert blog this morning nearly made me spit scrambled eggs. Same with The Onion.

Another trip down memory lane today: a movie adaptation of The Stone Angel is being made, the Margaret Laurence book we read in grade twelve. The director claims there’s lots of sex; I don’t remember it being like that, but I guess it was 13 years ago.

Okey doke, I’m off to write an exam. Wish me luck.

OK, the book-learnin’ is done. All that’s left now is to write the exam. I’m not worried; I reviewed the stuff over the last couple of nights and I believe we know this stuff better than we think we do. That’s the sign of a good prof. I could tell others in the class didn’t like her, but some people will always whine when they come up against a prof who expects a lot.

Oooh, and Thursday night’s pizza night. Sweeeeeet…

In other news entirely, I just took a trip down memory lane courtesy of this post at Cinematical. It’s about an old Warner Brothers cartoon called Duck Amuck, which they describe thusly: “You can argue whether the film is postmodern, deconstructionist, ahead of its time … but it’s inarguably hilarious.” I agree; I used to watch it as a kid and think, “This is probably even funnier than I think it is.” I should watch it again the next time I’m home on the farm.
