We'll keep the spider that bites the lady that cleans the couch that swallowed the fly

Three things about the condo:

  1. We have a new couch. It’s big and squishy.
  2. We have a giant spider (seen here) living on our balcony. I’m not particularly fond of spiders, but he’s eating the swarm of insects that seems to frequent the area, so he can stay. Click on the picture if you want to see a higher-res version.
  3. Cleaning lady: best invention ever.

.:.

CBGB came over last night while I was at work and taught Nellie how to make GB’s excellent veggie burgers. I got home in time to enjoy the beautiful weather on the balcony with them. We actually spent the whole night out there, ate some pizza from Amato, and even saw some unexpected fireworks. It was a nice end to a long week.

Violent protests in Halifax? Ontario supporting public transit? Yesterday was topsy-turvy day, apparently…

Touch me, I'm sick

I feel like hell. I really hope this goes away soon; my choices right now are drug myself up on cold meds, or stay undrugged and constantly fight the urge to drill holes in my own skull.

.:.

The fireworks last night were pretty cool. From our vantage point we could see them going off all over the place, at least two dozen little spots of light popping off at any given time. There seemed to be a bunch coming from Riverdale Park or Withrow Park, but the main attraction was over Ashbridges Bay. We could see (and occasionally hear) them very clearly. Canada Day should be pretty fun to watch from up here.

.:.

Farewell, 24. You were good once, in your first season. Now you suck. I will never watch you again, unless I hear that a) Jack dies and fights Nina in hell; b) Mandy returns.

.:.

I find it freaky that every 17 years a gigantic swarm of insects emerges in the mideast US. Extremely freaky.

We can, we're strong, we'll beat it

New music I’ve been listening to:

  • a sunny day in glasgow . “5-15 train”
  • black taj . “woke up tired”
  • dandy warhols . “she sells sanctuary”
  • dt’s . “330 freedom”
  • fujiya & miyagi . “casettesingle”
  • jandek . “nancy sings”
  • junior boys . “in the morning (hot chip remix)”
  • katie melua . “i cried for you”
  • kissaway trail . “61”
  • maximo park . “our velocity”
  • motor . “bleep”
  • papercuts . “take the 227th exit”

The Kissaway Trail and DT’s songs are particularly good.

From the “disgusting for more than one reason” file, we have this from CNN: a woman in Texas says a jury shouldn’t blame her husband for microwaving their baby, they should blame the devil.

Holy shee-ite.

Anyway…

Wrote 2/3 of my paper today. Couldn’t bring myself to write the whole thing. Bad, bad MBA candidate…

Hey, I know: how about a show called Video Game Killer Investigations?

Now that the carnage at Virginia Tech is past and the identities are known, I have another fear: that useful reactions to what happened will be ignored in favour of the irrational. My wager is that politicians will be scared to raise gun control as an issue, but that some bright light will call for the FBI/police to monitor creative writing assignments to screen for violent content, just as calls went out to restrict video games after the shootings at Columbine.

Interesting note from Wired: 8 hours after the VT shootings Reuters had raised the spectre of video games once again.

.:.

Still in a betting mood, I’ve got $20 that says the Globe’s Andrew Ryan is right about the inevitable creation of a CSI channel. I think maybe it’ll start out as a Law & Order/CSI channel; twice as many episodes that way. And hey, maybe they could add on Cold Case and Without A Trace and Crossing Jordan and just call it the Vanilla Predictable Investigation Channel. Their tagline: don’t think too hard.

I am Jack's [li] tag

My life is very, very point form right now. Nellie’s down at the new condo painting while I clean up the mess that has become our old place and write a paper for my class. We were up at 6-something this morning to pick up the car (from Autoshare) and drive to home depot, so the only thing keeping me awake right now is a steady Diet Pepsi drip.

Meanwhile, I have these for you:

OK, back to work.

And now: a brief bullety interlude

I’ve had a busy day, so point form is all yer gettin’:

OK, back to work. I have a term paper to write before all the packing can start.

Honeybee blues

I guess this is why there’s a sign at the Nova Scotia border saying that no honeybees are allowed to enter the province.

With a mysterious disease or parasite ravaging beekeepers’ hives in New Brunswick, honey producers in the region are in for a tough season.

It’s been going on in the U.S. for a while, and has obviously spread to eastern Canada. I suppose the isolationist honeybee policy might pay off.

Memo to Bell: fix your bloody ‘Simple Move Form’ application. I don’t know what the userid is for my digital voice application, and it doesn’t appear on any of my bills. You also shouldn’t ask me to reply to two questions with one radio button. Finally, when people give up on the form and call — as most will — keep your call center open later than 5 PM.

Seriously, what is it with Bell? I’ve never seen a company — a technology/internet company, no less — change their website so often without ever actually improving it.

Let's all hate polar bear cubs

I don’t think it’s any secret that I like animals. However, I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m an animal activist, especially when people who describe themselves as such claim it’s better to euthanize this polar bear cub than to raise him in a zoo. Now, I don’t think animals should be in zoos in the first place, but if the cub was born in a zoo and was rejected by his mother, I can only think it would be better off experiencing a life of some kind than to be put down because it’s not living the predictable life.

If the question were whether we should be going into the wild to adopt abandoned bear cubs, I’d say no, that’s disrupting the natural cycle. But, as I said, I also don’t think we should be putting animals in zoos, so until that practice ceases I don’t think we should be euthanizing healthy zoo-born animals just because, all other things being equal, they’d die in the wild.

There’s a new crosswalk in the Annex. Why is this interesting (to me, anyway)? Because I (and many others) damn near died crossing the street there to get to the Dominion. I don’t get back up to that neighbourhood very much anymore, but at least on the few occasions when I do (like the occasional concert at Trinity/St. Paul’s, or when I want to trade some coins for cash) I won’t be muttering “This &%#$ intersection needs a crosswalk!” as I dodge Hyundais.

I expect a hallelujah from Duarte on this. Stanzi and T-Bone used to live over there too; I suspect they dodged cars there more than once. It’s like a Toronto rite of passage.

.:.

Actually, one good reason to go back to that neighbourhood: the Hot Docs documentary festival. If you live in Toronto and you haven’t been, you owe it to yourself to go. I’m bummed that we won’t really have time to see many films this year as we’re moving right in the middle of the festival. Too bad; I really want to go see the reaction to Let’s All Hate Toronto.

Scattered thoughts

  • 93 people killed in a bombing attack in Iraq today. How is it that the news media barely pays attention to Iraq anymore? I can’t see this news anywhere on CNN’s front page right now; they’re too busy talking about other news like the Scooter Libby verdict, the randy astronaut story, Naomi Campbell, and a dog pulled from an icy lake “tail-a-wagging”. Bravo.
  • A new BBC poll says that Canada has the best international image. The news is met (outside of Canada, anyway) with an epic yawn.
  • Apple has unveiled a new product-unveiling product called the iLaunch. OK, not really, but give it time.
  • I hate how reviewers keep using the term “Springsteen-esque” when reviewing Neon Bible. Et tu, A.V. Club?
  • If Canadians think ATM fees are unfair, how would they like to be a Lloyd’s TSB customer? Ssoon their credit card customers will be charged 35 pounds per year if they don’t use their card enough.
